Can an interface reference become implementation context?

Design Repo is an AI-powered interface research platform for product designers, developers and AI coding agents.

01 · The product

References are more useful when they explain what an interface is doing.

Design Repo helps people explore real interface patterns, study their states and responsive rules, then turn relevant references into structured context that a designer, developer or AI agent can use.

02 · The question

A screenshot can show an answer without explaining it. The product asked: can a reference carry the relevant layout, state and responsive rules into implementation without a designer restating them each time?

03 · The decisions

Build for research people can use, not another gallery of attractive screens.

The central trade-off was to preserve what makes a reference useful while giving people and agents enough structure to interpret it responsibly.

01

Make research structured

Design Repo is organised around understanding and reusing interface decisions, rather than treating reference browsing as the end of the product.

02

Preserve character without copying

The system separates transferable principles from source-specific details. A reference should inform an interpretation, not become a template to reproduce.

03

Gate agent access

A secret-gated context bridge and controlled HTTP actions give coding agents useful context while keeping internal data and access boundaries explicit.

04

Prioritise consistent snapshots

Recorded context snapshots, request isolation and idempotency safeguards mean repeated agent requests should not create conflicting data or surprise changes.

04 · What was built

The research surface and the agent context bridge were designed as one system.

The product combines an editorial, index-led research experience with the underlying structure needed to store, retrieve and reliably reuse design context.

Working foundation

ResearchIndex-led browsing, persistent navigation and responsive interface behaviour.
ContextDesign profiles that store structured visual and implementation context.
BridgeA secure retrieval path with default profiles, snapshots and isolated requests.

05 · What is being tested

Will people value the reasoning behind a reference as much as the screenshot?

The next validation is whether structured context lets teams spend less time restating visual direction and make more deliberate implementation choices—especially when an AI coding agent is part of the workflow.

Evidence will come from the research flow, design profiles, context retrieval, responsive screens and direct comparisons between generic output and Design Repo-informed output. It will not claim quantified performance before that evidence exists.

06 · Current state

An early working system with the research and context bridge in place.

The initial product experience and technical foundation have been designed and partially implemented. The research surface, context profiles and agent bridge exist; visual fidelity and responsive behaviour are still being refined.

Design Repo is not yet a mature public product. This case study records the first working system around a question worth testing, rather than presenting unverified adoption or customer outcomes.
